It happens to the very best of us, seriously. You might be very excited about baking batch after batch of fresh baked cookies but eventually, somehow someway, you would reach a point where it just got boring. I know, it sounds unbelievable, but it will happen. It’s only a matter of time.
After all, when you fall into a routine, it’s only a matter of time until you feel that there has to be something better out there. While the batches of delicious chocolate chip cookies that you are baking on your cookie sheets may be top notch, there’s still a part of you that is looking for something bigger and better.
You have mastered the major points of your craft and it seems that you are simply going through the motions. You have already done something over and over so it seems that there’s really nothing else out there. It’s too easy to find yourself becoming complacent.
This is part of the human experience. This is not abnormal. This is not new. You are not immune to this train of thought because the funny thing about competence and skill is that the higher the levels you reach as far as competency goes, the more bored you become. It’s no surprise that the smartest kids in any classroom in the United States are almost always the kids that are the most bored. They go hand in hand. I would say that they are joined at the hip.
If you have reached this point in your baking career, whether as a professional or as an amateur, look into adding a little spice. I know that seems pretty straightforward. You might have heard it before, but let me tell you, adding a little spice to your cookie recipes definitely wakes up their flavor. You’d be surprised as to the effect a little cinnamon can have on the things you prepare and serve on your cookie sheets and cookie pans, seriously.
It may seem like cinnamon is like an everyday ingredient that people use pretty much everywhere. But unless you take the initiative and spice things up, you would not really realize how much of an impact such a small modification to your recipes would have. Unfortunately, when we get competent in anything, we develop a “been there done that” mindset. We always start referring new experiences or new challenges to things that we have done in the past. This really is too bad because we tend to shoot ourselves out from new experiences.
Instead of looking at the world with a new fresh set of eyes, we keep falling back to old formulas and clichés. If you really want to get out of that funk you’re in, try a little spice. It doesn’t have to be dramatic. It doesn’t have to be out of this world. You don’t have to shoot for something extra exotic. A little bit of cinnamon can do the trick because the great thing about spicing up your cookie recipes is that they open a gateway to the tremendous amount of imagination and creativity that you may have grown to overlook.
I really can’t blame you. If you keep doing the same thing over and over again, it’s very easy to think that your range of skills and competencies are basically restricted to the skill set that you access on a fairly regular basis. This really is too bad because you have a lot more to offer. You have a lot more to explore. You can tap into that tremendous natural sense of adventure all of us share.
Make no mistake about it, baking is an adventure. It may not seem like it. It may seem like you’re just going through the motions and going through a checklist but believe it or not, with every bite, with every cookie tray of goodies lies an experiment. It’s an experiment not just in taste, but also an experiment in your creativity, your imagination, and really, your hopes and dreams. I don’t want to sound melodramatic but this is true.
Everything that you do in your external life is a reflection of your internal life. What you choose to believe in. What your values are. What you’re going through. What your moods may be. All of these have an external effect. Tap into this by deciding to spice things up a little bit by taking the step into the unknown. Maybe you’re the type of person who’s very conservative and would like to travel around in tight circles. Be that as it may, a little bit of experimentation can really explode your sense of what is possible.
