Sweet potatoes are delicious, cheap, and nutritious. During the chilly winters in my apartment, I needed something that was budget-friendly, tasty, and warm. Oven baked sweet potato fries were my go-to snack. It’s hard to bake fries without getting squishy, limp strips of potato or burnt fries that stick to the pan. Here are four secrets to baking sweet potato fries from a self-dubbed expert.

  1. Cut the sweet potatoes into thin, shoestring-like strips. This ensures crispy fries, because there is more surface area to crisp. The cooking time will also be shorter. To cut the potatoes, pop them in the microwave until they are soft enough to cut in half. Peel off the skin, and slice into thin fries.
  2. Spray with light cooking spray- You don’t want your sweet potato fries to taste like oil, but you also don’t want them to turn out mushy. To get golden brown fries, a quick spray will do the trick. Butter flavored cooking spray will add a little flavor without all the calories of real butter.
  3. Bake at 425 degrees- Many people bake sweet potato fries at 350 degrees, which results in a soggy mess. If you don’t want your fries to turn into spaghetti, turn up the heat. Every sweet potato variety is slightly different as is every oven and baking sheet, but the fries usually take about 10 minutes to bake on each side. After 10 minutes at 425 degrees, flip the fries with a spatula and respray with cooking oil. To get them nice and crispy, broil for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Add some spice- Sweet potatoes are naturally sugary little starches, but they could always use a little something. For a sweeter dish, sprinkle brown sugar or maple syrup on a plate of hot fries. If you sprinkle on the pan, the sugar could melt and be difficult to scrub off. You can also try sprinkling the sweet potato fries with salt to dehydrate them for a crunchier result (alternatively use a recommended food dehydrator). Cinnamon and nutmeg are also great spices that give an autumn flavor to sweet potatoes. These spices, together or separately, blend smoothly with the sweet taste of the sweet potato fries.

Good luck with baking your potato fries; they are as easy to make as they are delicious to eat. I hope these four tips help you make the perfect batch of golden brown potato fries.
