We’ve handpicked the ten best electric sharpeners available right now. They’re all good quality, and should provide a useful addition to any kitchen or enthusiasts toolkit.

#1 – The Chef’s Choice 1520 AngleSelect Diamond Hone Knife

Chef's Choice 1520 AngleSelect Diamond Hone Knife Sharpener-Brushed Metal Product Image

To kick off our review, we thought we’d look at one of the most popular knife sharpeners on the market. The Chef’s Choice, has 3 types of sharpener within – a straight edge sharpener, serrated edge plus an option for double-bevel knives.

This sharpener isn’t just for USA chef’s though, you’ve the option to sharpen your knives to Asian style – with a 15-degree cut. It’s this attention to detail that’s made the Chef’s Choice popular. Some electric sharpeners, especially at the cheaper end of the market sharpen in a very hap-hazard away. You won’t find that with the Chef’s Choice, as it has flexible disks to get those edge super precise!

What We Liked About it: As with most of the Chef’s Choice models in our review, we love the quality, plus the ability to take care of all your sharpening jobs – from pure straight edges to serrated blades.

We’re also huge fans of the Asian blade edge function, it’s a winner!

#2 – The Chef’s Choice 120 3-Stage Sharpener

Chef's Choice 120 Diamond Hone 3-Stage Professional Knife Sharpener Product Image

Another sharpener from the guys at Chef’s Choice, this time it’s a slightly paired down (and cheaper) model than the 1520 above – yet it just about keeps up with the AngleSelect model.

If the 1520 brings you super precise blades by using flexible disks, then the 120 attempts to tackle this problem by using the 3-stage system to progressively get those blades fine. It’s not a bad system, especially considering the price tag, yet it’s not quite as good as the 1520.

Once again, you’ll be able to take care of most kitchen blades with the Chef’s Choice 120. It offers options for straight and serrated edges, and even though it’s a kitchen model – you’ll be able to sharpen sport knives too.

The Chef’s Choice 120 uses a diamond abrasive to do the sharpening; you’ll be able to get many years use out of these sharpeners before having to repair or replace anything.

What We Liked About it: A cheaper option than the 1520, yet it really doesn’t miss much to achieve the cheaper price. Sure, it’s diamond system isn’t quite as good as the 1520, yet it’s not that big a deal.

#3 – The Presto 08810 Professional Electric Knife Sharpener

Presto 08810 Professional Electric Knife Sharpener Product Image

First things first, I’m not a fan of consumer grade items that market themselves as “professional”. It’s usually a good sign that the gadget in question is anything but! However, the Presto looks like it packs the features you need – so we’re keeping an open mind.

The Presto manages to serve up some of the options the more expensive Chef’s Choice 1520 and 120 do, with a 3-stage system like the 120 and an ability to cope with straight and serrated edges. Unsure exactly how sharp you need your blade to be? The Presto 08810 offers a blade guide system to get the exact same result again and again. No need to keep checking your work, just sharpen and go!

One thing is for certain, the Presto is a well-priced piece of kit. It’s almost 3 times cheaper than the Chef’s Choice models above, yet with most of the features intact.

Of course, at this price you shouldn’t be expecting a tool that will last for many years. Even so, if you’re an occasional knife user, and really don’t want an expensive option the Presto could be for you.

What We Liked About it: A budget priced electric sharpener that really does pack in everything you need. Sure, the quality isn’t quite up there – yet for the occasional cook it should provide good service.

#4 – The Linkyo Electric Knife Sharpener

LINKYO Electric Knife Sharpener Product Image

Oh boy, no sooner had we finished reviewing the well-priced Presto sharpener, and even cheaper model comes into the fray. The Linkyo, loses some of the features to keep costs down – yet it’s not a bad machine.

An option we would suggest for any newcomer to blade sharpening, automatic guides mean you can sharpen again and again – with perfect precision. The Linkyo system isn’t perfect however, although it does a reasonable job for the price. Removable plugs mean you can clean the swarf and debris easy once you’ve finished sharpening. The receptacles are easy to keep clean too.

Okay, the Chef’s Choice comes with a huge 3 years warranty, and models featured below really do offer superb quality; however, the fact the Linkyo even manages to serve up any sort of warranty is amazing.

Like the Presto 08810, you shouldn’t expect years and years’ worth of solid use anyway.

What We Liked About it: A solid performer with a tiny price tag. The little Linkyo should serve the occasional sharpener with ease – although you might want to upgrade if you use your knives a lot.

#5 – The Chef’s Choice 15 Trizor XV Edge Electric Knife Sharpener

Chef's Choice 15 Trizor XV EdgeSelect Electric Knife Sharpener Product Image

Boosting the budget again, the Chef’s Choice 15 Trizor comes in at the higher end of our review budget. At this level, you’ll be getting some impressive features and build quality – just like the 1520 and 120 models.

You can really see where the extra outlay has been spent in the 15 Trizor. It features a solid outer casing, and has a real solidity to it – something the Presto and Linkyo just can’t match.

It comes with a 3-year warranty too, which is a testament to the quality on offer.

One of the cool things about the Trizor 15, is the fact it can convert standard blades to Trizor edged blades. I know quite a few knife aficionados who would pay good money for that option on its own.

Just like the 1520 and 120 Chef’s Choice models, the 15 Trizor serves up a 3-stage sharpening system to get your blades ultra-precise. Oddly enough, on test we felt the 3-stage system on the Trizor was even better than the flexible disks on the 1520 – given the extra outlay I guess that’s to be expected.

What We Liked About it: A real piece of quality that’s worthy of our top 10. A 3-year warranty backs up the premium feel, and the 3-stage sharpening system is a joy to use.

#6 – The Wustof PEtec Electric Sharpener Grey

Wusthof PEtec Electric Sharpener Product Image

For those of you who don’t know, Wustof are a very reputable German brand of knives popular with professional chef’s. As you’d imagine, this model comes in right at the top end of our sharpener roundup.

Unlike the other sharpeners tested, there aren’t any sharpening guides in the Wustof system. Instead, you simply pass the blade through the slot a certain number of times to get the required result. It sounds complicated, yet it’s easy to remember once you’ve used the machine a few times.

Even better, it gets extremely fine results.

As with most things German, the attention to detail and quality is second to none. We tested numerous blades with the Wustof sharpener, and all came out with a superbly precise blade.

The Wustof is probably where our consumer grade of sharpeners begins to meet the professional level. Everything about the Wustof is made is a high quality, with an alloy exterior and very high-quality abrasive disks.

What We Liked About it: Absolute German quality and no-nonsense in use. If we were looking for a top quality electric sharpener to take pride of place in a premium kitchen, this would be our pick.

#7 – Secura Electric Knife Sharpener – 2 Stage System

Secura Electric Knife SHARPENER Best 2-Stage Sharpening System Product Image

Wow, after using genuine professional grade Wustof electric sharpener, out next machine off the press is a far more budget affair! The Secura is a cheap and cheerful system, and as you’d expect has far fewer options in comparison with our other models on test.

Sure, it’s not a genuine 3-stage system; however, you’ll still get reasonable results with the Secura sharpener, plus it’s easy to use and designed specifically for the beginner.

Stage 1, is the main sharpening stage and take the blade back to a reasonably sharpened blade. Stage 2, is where the magic happens, honing the blade into something that can tackle most jobs easily.

This is a pleasant surprise, especially given that the Presto and Linkyo machines only offer a 1-year warranty. Although we felt the build quality of the sharpener was comparable to the Presto, the manufacturer must feel more confident in its longevity.

What We Liked About it: It’s a budget electric sharpening system that managed to keep up with the Chef’s Choice models when it comes to blade precision; however, don’t expect it to last quite as long. Even so, a sharper with this price tag is never to be sniffed at!

#8 – The Chef’s Choice 250 Hybrid

Chef's Choice 250 Diamond Hone Hybrid Knife Sharpener Product Image

The Chef’s Choice 250, is a middle range consumer grade sharpener. Even with the modest price tag, it features quite a few options you wouldn’t expect – making it a good half way house between spending big money and purchasing a super cheap, and less well made option.

In our view, this is where your extra cash will go when upgrading from something like a Presto or Linkyo will go. Those diamond tipped disks really will make short work of most knives, and leave your set with a wonderfully precise feel. Like most of the Chef’s Choice range, the Hybrid is focused entirely on the kitchen blade market. By offering a serrated and straight edge option, you’ll be able to sharpen almost every blade in your kitchen easily.

You know what, even though this model costs under half of what the Wustof does, it’s well made! Sure, the exterior is constructed from ABS plastic, yet that plastic is thick and strong, with every switch serving up a solid feel.

What We Liked About it: Probably our pick of the bunch for a superb sharpener for a moderate price. If you don’t fancy purchasing a budget model, yet don’t want to break the bank – the 250 Hybrid is for you!

#9 – The Presto 08800 EverSharp Electric Knife Sharpener

Presto 08800 EverSharp Electric Knife Sharpener Product Image

Another sharpener from Presto, the 08800 looks like the 08810, and in many respects, it is; however, the devil is in the detail!

Unlike the 08810, the 08800 has it’s cutting blades operating at a slightly different angle, helping you achieve a much finer cut. Couple this with guides across the top and you have an easy to use electric sharpener

Oh dear, you’d think a 3-stage system would be better and where the Presto falls down on; actually, not a bit of it! The 2-stage system once again stands up to our selection of blades, and even though it can’t compete with the Wustof – it’s not bad for the price.

What We Liked About it: Personally, we rate the 08800 more than the 08810 reviewed above. On the face of it they look identical, yet the little details make it a winner for us.

#10 – The Shenzhen Electric Diamond Knife Sharpener

Shenzhen Knives Electric Diamond Knife Sharpener for Ceramic Knives and Stainless Steel Knives

This is an interesting sharpener from a new brand on the block. Shenzhen knives are a well-known manufacturer based in Hawaii, making a range of ceramic blades for culinary use.

As you might expect from a manufacturer who prides itself on creating wonderful ceramic blades, the Shenzhen sharpener can deal with both steel and ceramic blades. It does this by changing the grit content of the abrasive, from 600 Grit to 800 Grit.

If you like to work with ceramic knives, this is the sharpener for you.

This guide system is slightly different than most of the sharpeners we have on test. With the Shenzhen system, you can change the finesse of the blade, similar in the way the Chef’s Choice can choose between USA/European and Asian styles.

You have more control with the Shenzhen though, so you’ll be able to get the perfect blade edge to suit your cutting style – one for the knife geeks out there!

Unfortunately, the Shenzhen electric sharpener doesn’t work on serrated blades.

What We Liked About it: By far the best option out there if you need a sharpener that can tackle ceramic blades. It’s also a well-made piece of kit and easily on a par with the Wustof. Our only issue, is the lack of a serrated blade option – a real shame.

How We Chose the Top Knife Sharpener in Our List?

It took us some time to figure out exactly which electric sharpener should be on your shopping list. Our review went through many phases, with different brands performing well across the review.

  • Blade Precision – For this test, we took a variety of knives and passed them through each model, checking the quality and precision of the blade produced. Sometimes, cheaper models just can’t provide that perfect cutting blade that chef’s love for chopping things like vegetables quickly.

The Wustof makes the grade here, with the Chef’s Choice Hybrid as a close runner up. We wanted to include the Chef’s Choice model here, because of the Wustof and its high price point, and the fact the Hybrid achieves a cutting blade that’s close – amazing considering the difference in price!

  • Number of Sharpening Stages – Sure, some of our more budget options, like the Presto and Linkyo models only have a 2-stage sharpening system. Yet even if you only want a budget system, the Chef’s Choice Hybrid offers a full 3-stage system as a decent price, whilst the Presto 08800 is about as close to a 3-stage quality as you’ll get from a 2-stage sharpener. If you want the best, the Wustof id where it’s at regarding sharpening stages. Yet the Hybrid Chef’s Choice comes a close 2nd and Presto 08800 making a solid case in a budget package.
  • Serrated Edges – Almost every sharpener we reviewed could sharpen serrated edged blades. The only model that couldn’t was the Shenzhen with its rather specialized ceramic blade system. The Chef’s Choice 120 was the king at sharpening serrated blades, with the Wustof and Chef’s Choice 1520 coming close. Unfortunately, none of the more budget sharpeners on test were particularly good at dealing with serrated edges.
  • Ceramic Blades – This is an easy choice; the Shenzhen was the only model that could cope with ceramic blades – next please!

Why You Need an Electric Sharpener in Your Life?

If you’re sick of purchasing cheaper knives that just don’t cut it (Oh dear, another Pun) after a few months, the idea of being able to keep your knives serviceable over many years use becomes increasingly important. There’s not much that annoys seasoned cooks than cheap, blunt knives, yet it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to upgrade.

If you’re on a budget, you’ll find that even the cheaper models listed above will be a huge improvement over buying cheap, throw away knives. You’ll eventually finding yourself sharpening your knives every few months, trading up to a better model once you realize just how amazing freshly cut blades are!

Electric knife sharpeners aren’t just a chef’s domain either. From those who enjoy fishing, to frequent campers and outdoor types – a decent sharpening system can keep all your blades perfect. You’ll thank yourself when you need a knife, and a perfect one is always available!

If you’re still unsure, count the number of knives you use in everyday life. If you cook frequently, or camp out every Summer, it’s highly likely a decent electric sharpener will improve your life dramatically!

What Is the Best Electric Sharpener?

Once you start doing your research, you’ll likely begin to start looking for the things we touched upon in our review. The number of sharpening stages and overall quality is very important, although please don’t get too caught up in the 2 vs 3 stage debate – some budget 2-stage models do a fine job!

Another thing to look for, is the manufacturer’s warranty. Sharpening tools have a lot of moving parts in their construction, and as a simple rule, the more years warranty you get, the more faith the vendor has that all those nuts, bolts and screws won’t come loose!

Other than the quality and sharpening stages, other aspects aren’t quite as important. For newcomers to sharpening, you might want to purchase a model that’s easy to use and has guides to help you get consistent results. That’s where the cheaper models really do shine; designed for the novice, they often have pre-cut guides and angle adjustments for you to play with whilst learning.

This sounds tricky, yet you’ll soon learn how to sharpen like a pro!
