#1 – Kirkland Brand Stretch-tite Plastic Wrap

Kirkland Brand Stretch Tite Plastic Wrap Product Image

Check any internet discussion of the best plastic wrap out there, on forums and cooking blogs alike, you’ll notice the reoccurring name ‘’Stretch-tite”. It even got to the point where many cooks out there, professional chefs included, use this plastic wrap. And it’s not our top choice for nothing, and it’s the cheapest out of the five plastic covers that we’re going to talk about.

The Stretch-tite is BPA-free and features an option slide, which makes using the wrap a lot easier. The wrap is available in large sizes which makes it quite the economical choice, but this has a drawback, and that is storing.

Most cooks appreciate the thickness of this wrap which allows you to stretch it widely across almost everything. In addition, the wrap is very clingy, even in the cases where you wrap it all around itself which is a welcome feature as it helps preserve food more efficiently.

Although the Stretch-tite reputation was questioned when it was bought by the Kirkland brand, due to the noticeable decrease in the thickness of the product. But it’s still the most affordable option out there and many people always recommended, us included.

What we like about it

To cut it short, the Stretch-tite’s pros include the option to get it in large rolls, the slide cutter that comes with the package, and it’s stretchy and highly clingy nature. It’s also an excellent option to maintain the food’s freshness and is an overall inexpensive option.

#2 – Saran Premium Plastic Wrap

Saran Premium Plastic Wrap Product Image

A Product of SC Johnson company, a company that’s well-renown for the variety of household products that it produces, the Saran Premium wrap is one of the original plastic cling wraps out there.

Similar to most plastic wraps out there, the Saran wrap is made of food-safe polyethylene and is also BPA-free. The manufacturers even go as far as claiming that it can be put in the microwave, but that’s something that has yet to be confirmed by someone, and we wouldn’t recommend doing it anyway. It’s also extremely stretchy and clingy, which are probably the two most important things to look for when seeking a perfect plastic wrap.

The SC Johnson brand has a loyal following, a large number of people have relied on this brand and made sure that the wrap is always present in their household for many years. All of them praise it for its incredible ability to keep the foods fresh and its clinginess.

However, some old users of this product have expressed their dissatisfaction with how the quality of the wrap has reportedly gone down over the years. Many of them mention how they find it way less clingy than it was before and how it tears under the slightest pressure. Moreover, the cutter placement is rather bad which makes it somewhat tricky to use without tangling with the box.

What we like about it

For the pros of using this wrap, for one, it clings to many different foods, is made of food-safe polyethylene and BPA-free.

#3 – Bee’s Wrap Reusable Storage Wrap

Bee’s Wrap Reusable Storage Wrap Product Image

While this technically isn’t plastic wrap, it’s a sheet of organic cotton that was infused with beeswax, jojoba oil, and tree resin to give it the ability to adhere to itself or a surface like ceramic or glass, this works after it reacts to the bit of heat that your hand produces.

It’s an eco-friendly option that does and achieves the same result as a plastic wrap but with a twist! It can be used many times, unlike the single-use plastic wraps.

Although it sounds cool, it doesn’t come without flaws, the first of which is the fact that it comes in specific sizes which limits the ways you use it. And it sometimes fails to cling to surfaces, and although we find the beeswax smell that it leaves rather pleasant, some people hate it.

At the end of the day, we have both plastic wraps and beeswax wrap at home, and although we’d prefer to use Bee’s Wrap as much as possible, it sometimes fails to meet the needs of some people.

What we like about it

For the pros of using beeswax Wrap, its unique in the fact that it’s reusable and can be composted when it’s no longer clingy, and it’s eco-friendly.

#4 – Glad Press’n Seal Wrap

Glad Press’n Seal Wrap Product Image

Coming from Glad, a well-known manufacturer for all the household plastic goods that they produce. This wrap is unique in the fact that it utilizes a technology called “griptex,” this is the fancy word for the wrap having an adhesive on one side and a texture on the other. Which allows you to make envelopes and custom pouches with it.

It covers the meal in a tight and very solid way, making it our top pick for leak-proofing out of all these plastic wraps.

Many consumers have expressed their satisfaction in the ‘’griptex’’ feature that the wrap comes with and the possibilities that it offers in comparison to regular plastic wrap.

But issues exist, for one, the cutting stripe is made of plastic and seems to fail most of the times you try to use it, which means you’ll have to probably compromise and use a pair of scissors or a knife instead. Another issue that some consumers have noticed is the fact that the adhesive seems to come off on their foods and sandwiches, leaving some hard to remove residue.

What we like about it

In conclusion, this wrap clings very well to a variety of different surfaces and can be used in various techniques. However, the plastic cutter that it comes with is pretty low quality and fails very often, moreover, the adhesive that makes this plastic wrap special can stick to surfaces and is quite difficult to remove.

#5 – AEP Zipsafe Sealwrap

Aep Zipsafe Sealwrap Product Image

This wrap is unique in the material it was made of, unlike most plastic wraps out there which are made from food-grade polyethylene, this one is made from PVC Plastic.

Most cooks who use this wrap regularly praise it for being very clingy to the dishes without getting tangled when applying it, which is a rare thing to see. They also appreciate the substantially longer width of this wrap in comparison to the other wraps out there, so if you happen to be wrapping large containers on a regular basis, you might want to consider buying this wrap over the others.

The main complaint that people have with this product is the large size of its box and the weakness of the cardboard used, which will eventually lead to the slider getting detached, and although some people have apparently managed to reattach it or tape it somehow, it’s still a bit of an inconvenience.

Finally, PVC provides excellent clinging, but it can be a cause for concern when it comes to your own health and the environment in general.

What we like about it

What we really dig about the AEP Zipsafe Sealwrap is the safe material of which it’s made. PVC Plastic is so versatile and reliable that you can use it to cover your leftovers whether you’re following a Thai Cookbook, a Cajun Cookbook, or even a Cake Cookbook.

The Many Uses of Plastic Wrap

Plastic wrap is an essential tool to have in your kitchen’s drawer, it has many uses:

Some women even use plastic wrapping on their hair for conditioning treatments and more.

It is truly a versatile product that can be used for a number of completely different things.

What to Look for When Buying Plastic Wraps

Now that you have a general idea about what plastic wrap is used for, here are some things that you need to keep in mind when shopping for plastic Wraps

Material

Back in the day when plastic wraps started to become a thing, most of them were made of PVC, short of polyvinyl chloride which grants a nice clingy wrap. But there were raising concerns from health experts and consumers alike about the potential health impacts of PVC as it can leach into the dishes.

However, nowadays, most plastic wraps are made of food-grade polyethylene which on does not leach into food at all but it tends to miss the desired clinginess that PVC offers. But it’s still a perfect alternative due to the absence of health concerns around it.

Width

The most common width in domestic use plastic wraps is 12 inches. This is good for the majority of plates out there and smaller bowls, however, you might need to seek something a bit wider if you’re one to cover large dishes, like a Cookie Sheet and such, on a regular basis.

If you know how to look, you’ll probably stumble on some wider wraps that are made for commercial use, but keep in mind that these wraps usually come in larger sizes than the normal ones.

Leak-proofness and Permeability

No matter what dish you’re wrapping with your plastic wrap, you probably don’t want the different smells and moistures of the fridge to come in contact with your wrapped food. And it’s this case the material used, and the thickness of the plastic wrap are the two determiners of the probability of that happening.

Although some brands advertise the ability of their wraps to hold liquid in a cup, even if you tip it upside down, this probably isn’t true as most plastic wraps fall victim to the slightest force of gravity. Try tilting a Beer Glass, and you’ll see for yourself.

Health and Environmental Concerns

Most plastic wraps are single-use based, which means you’ll throw them the moment they’re used, and unfortunately, most municipalities fail to recycle plastic wrap for its thin nature, so it most likely ends up in the landfill.

Healthwise, as we’ve previously mentioned, PVC wraps contain phthalates and a number of other ingredients that can be harmful to your health.

Polyethylene, on the other hand, doesn’t leach to your dish, making it a lot safer but in some instances, it can contain BPA.

That’s why we recommend making sure that the plastic wrap you’re buying is Polyethylene and BPA free or you can entirely ditch the idea of using plastic wraps and get some food storage containers instead, but that’s an issue for another day.

Cutting

Most boxes of plastic wrap usually feature an edge of teeth, either made from thin metal or plastic, which is obviously used to cut your wrap in the necessary size. And as you’ve probably noticed with our reviewing of 5 different plastic wraps above, they can either work perfectly or not work at all, and that depends on their positioning, material, and the strength of the cardboard box that’s holding them.

Wrapping Things Up!

Puns aside, if you ever feel in need of wrapping stuff up then you should probably consider getting a plastic wrap as soon as possible.

In our case, most consumers recommend Kirkland’s Stretch-tite, and most of our team appreciate it for multiple things, mainly its sturdy slide cutter.

But if you’re looking to preserve the green, then go with the Bee’s wrap as it can stick to most stuff and can be used on multiple occasions.
