Usually when people buy best baking dishes, they think that the lid has to be the exact same material as the rest of the dish. I really can’t blame them for thinking this way because a lot of baking dishes are packaged this way. This is how they’re designed.
When you’re look for the best ceramic baking dishes, it goes without saying for the most part, that the lid would also be made of ceramic. A lot people think that this is the way to go, but the problem here is when you bake something and it’s really hot, the lid has to diffuse the heat.
In other words, when you touch the lid or the handle on the lid, you’re not going to get burned. This is going be a little bit tough because when you put the baking dish in the oven, with the lid on, the lid is going to take a lot of heat along with the baking dish. This is part of ensuring that whatever it is you’re baking is baked properly.
The good news here is that if you best bakeware sets, some come with different types of lid. Some have materials that have a lid handle. You only need to cool down the whole dish for a few minutes for the handle to completely cool off. Put simply, the handle on the lid cools at a much faster rate than the rest of the baking dish.
This is a big deal because you don’t want to burn your fingers. That should be common sense. Also, you would not want to use baking mitts and all that when handling the lid, because you might drop the lid. Depending on your hand and eye coordination, this might prove to be too awkward for you. You’re not alone.
It’s very common for people, when dealing with the heat of the rest of the baking dish, to lose focus when holding the lid through the handle using a baking mitt. They don’t have much traction as they would if they were using their bare hands. This can lead to all sorts of problems. Also, a broken or shattered lid is useless to you.
Thankfully, most baking dishes out there have lids that can take the shock of being dropped. You basically have to pitch them at the floor at a high velocity for them to shatter. Still, you want a lid that has a handle that diffuses heat, so look at different materials.
Which materials make for great lid handles for baking dishes that might be piping hot? Your guiding principle here should be cooldown rate. The faster a material type cools down, the more you should consider it. Keep in mind that while the baking dish or pan is in the oven, the lid’s materials might actually be a fast and efficient conductor of heat. However, once the pan is out of the oven, the lid’s materials should diffuse the heat rapidly to the surrounding air. Look for very quick air cooling properties. With all this in mind, what kind of materials should you consider for bakeware lids?
First, look into wood. Seriously. Wood might not be all that ‘sexy’ as bakeware material but there are certain types of wood that can withstand a tremendous amount of heat. Alternatively, look for ceramic composites that have a very rapid cooldown rate.
The bottom line? Don’t assume that you are stuck with buying a best kids baking dish that has a lid with a handle that is basically the same material as the rest of the baking dish.
This is very important because if the baking dish takes a while to cool down, then the rest of that assembly would take some time to cool down. So try to look for baking dishes that have many different parts because these differences can mean that the heat is diffused at different rates and can lead to you handling the baking dish more comfortably.
The last thing that you want is to fumble around with the lid as you take it out, because there might be steam underneath. At the very least, there’s some heat radiating out. Whatever the case may be, it may not be an optimal experience. It may not be what you expected it to be. So protect yourself by making sure that the baking process, or in this case the post baking process is a quick, convenient, and safe as possible. And the best way to do this is to look for composite lids that have a lid handle that can diffuse the heat fairly quickly.
