Blackened seasoning is not actually a type of seasoning, but more a way that you will actually use the herbs from your spice racks. This is commonly used when preparing fish, but can be applied in a range of different situations.
Essentially, you are going to take the item that you plan to blacken, and then dip it into melted butter. This melted butter is going to contain a large combination of different herbs and spices that you’ll add with your spice grinders.
While you can use any different herbs and spices at this point, popular options include thyme, oregano, chilli pepper, peppercorns, garlic powder (or use a garlic press) etc.
Though the original recipe for blackening involved using redfish, it can actually be used with a variety of different protein sources. Other popular options actually include other types of fish, as well as steak or chicken cutlets.
An Example of using Blackened Seasoning
To demonstrate why this works so well, let’s take a look at one blackening recipe. For this one, you are going to be making blackened salmon. This is a great choice: salmon is already a delicious fish that is rich with a number of highly beneficial nutrients – in particular, salmon is a source of omega 3 fatty acid, which is well known for its brain-boosting properties. Omega 3 is able to protect cells by improving cell membrane permeability (the ability for nutrients and signals to pass through the cell walls), as well as reducing inflammation and much more. That’s why every family should keep a fish poacher to hand.
Omega 3 has also been shown to raise your mood by increasing the production of the hormone DHEA (which combats stress), and to help improve learning by supporting myelination of cells (thickening the connections between neurons).
To make this one, you will need four salmon fillets with the skin on, 1.5 teaspoons of cumin, 1.5 teaspoons of paprika, 1.5 tsp cayenne pepper, 1.5 tsp garlic powder, .5 tsp salt, and .5 tsp pepper. Finally, you may want some olive oil and oregano/parsley/lemon wedges for serving.
Get your trusty food chopper and cutting board and get to work preparing! Then take a small bowl – perhaps one that comes with stainless-steel mixing bowl sets – and then mix the dry ingredients together. Meanwhile, you will pat seasoning mixture into the flesh side of each piece of salmon and then take your skillet and cover it in oil over a medium heat.
Place the salmon flesh-side down in the hot oil. Cook for 2-3 minutes and then flip onto the other side with a spatula.
As you can see, this recipe uses oil instead of butter but the concept is the same: searing a bunch of different spices and herbs onto fish in order to create a delicious and aromatic coating! You can then grab a knife from a knife block and prepare some vegetables to go on the side.
Once it’s all together, you’ll have a hearty, healthy, and extremely tasty dish that you can serve for the whole family!
