Cajun seasoning, also known as Cajun rub, is a type of seasoning that is commonly used in Cajun cooking. This is a cuisine that is known for its delicious, spicy meats, and its rich flavors. It’s also something that is increasingly more popular in street food and in the kitchen. Add this amazing seasoning to your spice racks and you can start enjoying it too!
What is Cajun Seasoning?
So just what is Cajun seasoning? What’s unique about this seasoning is that it is not actually just one seasoning – but several different spices and herbs that are mixed together to make a unique but very distinct taste.
If you want to make your own, then you can use the following recipe:
- 2 tablespoons garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons paprika
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 1 tablespoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
- 1 tablespoon dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
Alternatively use a a garlic press to add the garlic that way. It’s very easy to make – just chop up the different ingredients and mix. So why not grab your apron and cutting board and have shot at it?
The result will be a delicious and spicy rub that you can add to meats and even add to vegetables and chutneys.
What can you do with it?
One great option is to make yourself a delicious Cajun jambalaya. This is a combination of spices and vegetables added to stock pots that are then used to slow cook with meat. The result is a meat that is soft and tender with a rich flavor that is infused with it.
To give it a go, take a slow cooker or similar and then add to it some meat (such as chicken), along with chopped onion, celery, red bell pepper, and some rice. Crucially, take the Cajun seasoning and rub it over your meat, along with some oil.
You can leave this slow cooker to cook away for a while if you’re at work, and when you get home you’ll have a delicious and spicy dish to enjoy. Want to make it yourself? With large sauce pans this is of course also possible. It also works very well on fish if you want to use a skillet.
History of Cajun Seasoning
When you eat your seasoning, remember that you’re also enjoying a little bit of history.
Cajun cooking actually comes from the Acadians, who were forced out of Britain in 1755 during what is now referred to as ‘le Grand Derangement’. Those people would go on to settle in Southern Louisiana, where they found that many of their usual recipes were no longer viable due to the different climate. As such, they would have to create new dishes. These tend to use grilling tools, seafood boiler and a host of other options.
The result? A delicious and highly versatile cuisine that is now enjoyed all around the world!
