Cardamom seed powder is a seasoning/spice that comes from the seeds of various plants belonging to the ginger family. This spice is native to Southern India but is also grown in Guatemala. The history of cardamom can be traced back a long time to Ancient Egypt, 4,000 years ago. In fact, it is widely considered to be one of the oldest spices used by man! It was the Vikings however who first discovered the spice when travelling and brought it back to Scandinavia. Originally, it came from wild plants located in Southern India.
Cardamom Use and Tips
When using cardamom, opting to purchase the seed powder is often the most straightforward option. It can also be purchased inside the pods, but in this case you will need to break the pod open yourself. You’ll need to lightly crush the whole pod and add that to the mixture. You can do this with a garlic press.
Cardamom works well in stews and curries and is popular in these situations. If you like getting the most out of your stainless steel cookware sets and cooking in a single pot or a couple of sauce pans, then you may find that this is a great option.
What many people will be surprised to learn, is that cardamom has a great affinity with chocolate. Add just a little cardamom to a chocolate cake or another chocolate recipe, and it can work absolute wonders.
A Recipe using Cardamom Powder
The best way to see how to use any herb or spice is almost always to try cooking with it. That way, you can see not only how it tastes, but how it affects the taste of something it is added to. Not only that, but it can also give you a good idea of how to handle it.
For this one, you’re going to need quinoa, porridge oats (a ratio of 3-1), and cardamom seed powder. You’ll also want a little unsweetened almond milk, 2 ripe peaches, and some syrup. Place the quinoa, the oats, and the pods into a pan. Scoop some pear into the mix using a grapefruit spoon, then stir in the milk. Simmer for 15 minutes.
