A gluten-free bread dough has a different appearance and consistency compared with a gluten-containing dough. The gluten-free dough is also usually heavier and stickier that makes it a little difficult to mix.

There are integral structural differences between a gluten-free dough and a gluten-containing dough. So, here are some of the tips you can utilize to have that gluten-free baking success using a bread machine.

You don’t need to buy the most expensive bread machine.

You don’t have to have the most expensive bread machine to have the best gluten-free bread. The process of baking a gluten-free bread is the same no matter what model of the bread machine you use. You only must use the right and quality ingredients, the right process, and the best gluten-free bread machine that is reliable.

This will also involve a lot of practice if you don’t get what you want on the first try. But with these tips and techniques, you can surely achieve the gluten-free bread baking success you want using a bread maker.

You don’t need to have a bread maker with a gluten-free setting.

Although having a bread maker with a gluten-free setting can make your work a lot easier, an older bread maker can also work just as fine. Just make sure that it is free from any gluten residue before you start baking your gluten-free bread.

Using bread machine without gluten-free setting.

For baking a gluten-free bread in a bread machine without gluten-free setting, you can read your machine manual on how to override the pre-programmed settings.

You can usually set your machine for a mix or knead cycle for about 20 minutes, 1 hour of rising cycle, and another 1 hour for the bake cycle. Make sure to prevent the machine doing a punch down or a second rise. This is the setting you don’t need for your gluten-free bread because it can damage the loaf.

Use the right bread machine pan.

One of the most important tips for making the best gluten-free bread using a bread machine is matching the bread recipe to the pan size of the bread machine. Not using the suitable pan size for a certain recipe can result in some unsuitable size of the loaves.

You have to check the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the loaf sizing. This will make sure that you get the exact size of the bread you want. Also, having the pan size match what is in your bread recipe will make it sure that your bread is baked evenly.

Use ingredients at room temperature.

In baking a gluten-free bread, it is an important reminder to only use bread machine ingredients at room temperature. This will allow the yeast to work since using cold ingredients hinders the yeast’s action and also shortens the rise.

For eggs in your recipe, you can heat a bowl of water and put your un-cracked eggs in it to help bring them to the room temperature.

If the proofing time is up but the yeast is still not foamy, then it means it’s no longer fresh and not suitable to be used in your recipe.

One of the most basic tips to remember in baking a gluten-free bread using a bread machine is the sequence of putting the ingredients in the bread machine pan.

All the liquid ingredients always have to come into the bread machine pan first. Dry ingredients should be whisked well in a clean bowl first before putting them into the top of the liquid ingredients in the pan.

Make your thermometer handy.

An instant read thermometer can be a great investment in making a gluten-free bread using a bread maker. This will help you decide if your bread is fully cooked.

Take the temperature of your gluten-free bread before taking it out from the bread maker. It should be about 190 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit in the middle of the loaf and should come out clean.

Let your bread cool in the pan.

When you make sure that your gluten-free bread is fully baked, you can now take it from the bread maker to prevent it from being soggy. Lay the pan on its side for about 5 minutes and shift it to the other side for another 5 minutes or so. Now you can gently remove the bread from the pan and let it cool completely on a wire rack.

Storing your gluten-free bread from the bread machine.

Depending on what gluten-free bread recipe you use, it should stay fresh for a few days when stored in a zip-top bag on your table or countertop. However, make sure that the bread has completely cooled before putting it into the bag.

Never refrigerate your gluten-free bread if you don’t want them to dry out. If you can’t finish the whole loaf of your bread, you can slice it and freeze in a zip-top freezer container. Put wax paper or parchment paper between slices to make the frozen slices easier to separate.
