As Bake with Compassion Week begins, home bakers are being urged to take to their kitchens and produce mouthwatering cakes and desserts to help raise money for charity. Here is some more information about the charity and how you can get involved.
What Is Compassion in World Farming
Set up in 1967 by a British farmer who did not agree with the new intensive ways of rearing animals for food, Compassion in World Farming is now over 40 years old. It continues to campaign against poor conditions for farm animals and has some huge achievements under its belt. Here are a few of them, some radical for the food industry:
- Veal crates (tiny cages to hold calves) were banned in the UK in 1990 and in the EU in 2007
- In 1999 sow stalls (restrictive cages for pigs) were banned in the UK and are illegal in the EU from 2013
- Barren battery cages for egg-laying hens are banned in the EU from 2012
- After 10 years of campaigning, the EU legally recognised in 1997 that animals could feel pain and suffering. This radical change leads the way for all future animal welfare claims.
Bake With Compassion Week and How to Get Involved
It is perhaps no accident that Bake With Compassion Week is scheduled while many UK school children will be on their half-term school break – and of course it ends at Halloween! Many of us will be baking treats for the children and for Halloween, so why not make the effort to use free-range eggs in your baking?
A free fund-raising pack can also be downloaded for people to use to sell their cakes at bake sales and events up and down the country. The organisers can also send the pack in the post if you are unable to print it yourself. At the last Bake with Compassion event, 450 supporters registered – a sign of the huge support that Compassion in World Farming receives.
Whether you decide to hold a bake sale, or have a few friends and family around for afternoon tea, Bake with Compassion is a great way to raise money for a cause that ultimately affects not just the animals that suffer, but all of us through our food.
