If there’s one thing that reunites every single soul around the world, it has to be the universal love for Nutella. The choco-wonder has been seeping into the lives of millions of people around the globe for years now, and for a good reason. I mean, come on, who doesn’t love freaking Nutella?
Yeah, sure, it’s not that healthy of a food, and I’m not, by any mean, advising you to consume it day and night, but there’s no denying that it should be a staple in your fridge or Compact Refrigerator if you’re one to enjoy new recipes that include chocolate as a topping.
A question raises here, how to melt Nutella?
Well, there are several ways to do it effectively, including Microwaving it, but there’s more to the matter, so read on to discover how to turn your favorite Choco-food into a finger-licking topping for your desserts.
First, What is Nutella?
Weird question, right? You’re probably thinking “Who doesn’t know what Nutella is?”. Well, soon after skimming through this section, you’ll discover that it’s more than just a brownie tongue pleasure.
It’s common knowledge that Nutella is sweetened hazelnut cocoa spread that’s the creation of the Italian company “Ferrero”. But what you prosbably don’t know is that Nutella dates back to the WWII, when the Italian baker Pietro Ferrero tried adding ground hazelnut into a chocolate spread. It must have felt weird that day, but thanks to that unpretentious event, we can enjoy Nutella day and night today, and this chocolate spread is here to stay.
What’s so wonderful about Nutella is that it can be consumed any way you like, whether you prefer to spread it over your morning waffles, pancake, or toast, or you’re more into simpler Nutella-based desserts, such as Nutella cheesecakes, Ice Cream, or fudge brownies.
But despite its numerous traits, our only problem with Nutella is the fact that it’s not as healthy as the company is trying to advertise it to be.
How Healthy is Nutella?
Take a look at the label, and you’ll soon discover that Nutella isn’t as healthy as the advertisement makes it to be, not for you, nor for your kids. Why? Because it packs a whopping amount of Sugar, 57 % to be exact, making it the most significant ingredient of the chocolate spread.
Sugar isn’t the only ingredient though, as Nutella contains certified sustainable palm oil, the component that gives it the infamous creamy texture, along with skimmed milk powder, cocoa, and 100% pure hazelnut paste. Finally, Nutella contains two harmless additives; soy lecithin and synthetic vanillin, making it quite simple compared to other foods in the same category.
A couple of tablespoons of Nutella deliver around 200 calories, 21 grams of sugar, 21 grams of fat, along with 2 grams of protein and 4% of the Recommended Dietary Allowance of both Iron and Calcium.
The good news is that Nutella doesn’t contain too many artificial ingredients, such as artificial Food Coloring and high-fructose corn syrup.
Well, not healthy, but not so bad either.
Knowing all that, the truth is pretty clear; Nutella isn’t healthy, no matter what the company’s “experts” and advertisers are claiming. On the bright side, it doesn’t contain highly-processed ingredients, so if you dread those, it can definitely be an excellent addition to your dessert every now and then. When you feel down and sad, just get yourself some of the creamy chocolate spread, and off you go to a good day.
Remember, gather all your willpower and determination every time you’re about to open a Nutella jar using your Jar Opener, as what starts with a small spoon may end up in a chocolate feast, which may, in the long run, lead to dire conditions such as diabetes and obesity.
How to Melt Nutella: Our Recommended Methods
This is probably the most commonly-followed method when it comes to melting anything food-wise. After all, all you need is to get the following on one of your Microwave Carts, and you’re good to go:
- A Microwave (DUH!)
- A Microwave-safe bowl, preferably a glass one
- A wooden or metal spoon (avoid plastic spoons as they’re likely to spread some harmful chemicals in your food when hot)
Now, for the real action:
- Scoop the Nutella out of the jar using the wooden or metal spoon
- Place the chocolate spread into the microwave-safe bowl and leave it without a cover
- Set the microwave to medium settings and turn it on for around 20 seconds
- Take out the bowl and stir the chocolate then get it back into the microwave and turn it on for an extra 20 seconds.
- Take out the bowl and check the consistency. If you like it, it’s time to get your Donut Maker, if you don’t, repeat the process again until you do.
Before moving into the next method, we need to remind you that you shouldn’t overdo the process as you may end up burning the Nutella, altering the taste, and turning what would’ve been a fantastic dessert into an abomination.
Place it in Hot Water
Another easy way to melt Nutella If you don’t (or rather not use) a microwave. For this, you need:
- A Pot
- Some Water
- A heat-proof bowl
- A metal or wooden spoon
- A small glass bowl if you’re not comfortable melting the whole jar
- Fill the pot with water then place it on the Gas Cooktop, make sure to set it on high heat.
- Remove the pot as soon as the water starts boiling
- Pour the water in the heat-proof bowl immediately until it reaches the half of the bowl to avoid spilling it over the side later on.
- Open the Nutella jar and place it in the water.
- Leave the chocolate to soften, stir it, then leave it there for five minutes while stirring it using the wooden spoon every now and then.
- Keep doing so until you get the consistency you desire.
- Voila! Reach to you Crepe Maker and start making some chocolate crepe.
What’s convenient about this method is the fact that it’s relatively safe since you cannot overheat the Nutella or burn it.
Use a Hot Spoon
Before starting, keep in mind that this method is only suitable for small amounts of Nutella. Also, you can’t liquify the spread chocolate completely through this process, but it’s an easy method that you can follow if you just need to spread some Nutella over whatever it is you’re eating, such as bread, pancakes, or waffles.
All you need for this method is the following:
- The Nutella Jar
- Some hot water
- A metal spoon or Knife
So, how to do it?
- Place the metal spoon or knife under hot running water.
- Let the spoon heat for some time, preferably one minute or so.
- Wipe the water off then scoop the Nutella immediately and start spreading it right away.
- Repeat the whole process if the spoon cools off too soon until you’re done with the spreading.
Alternatively, you can dip the spoon in hot coffee, tea, or milk, whatever you have ready, as that would be more convenient.
For even lazier people, you can get an electric butter spreader, which is a small knife that can make spreading Nutella smooth as butter (pun intended for sure).
