Italian Honey Cookie & Nutmeg Loaf Recipes


This holiday season consider baking up a batch of Italian Honey Cookies or Nutmeg Loaf to have on hand when friends and neighbors come caroling.

These tasty treats also make a wonderful addition to homemade gift baskets.

Italian Honey Cookie

To make the “Italian Honey Cookies” you will need the following ingredients;

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 cups flour
  • ¼ lb. oleo, melted and slightly cooled
  • Honey
  • Powdered sugar

Once you have all of your ingredients assembled it is time to start baking. Mix eggs, sugar, and oleo in a large bowl. Add flour to preceding mixture until it forms a pliable dough ball. Refrigerate for dough ball for 30 minutes. Take portions of the dough ball and roll to form several long ropelike pieces of dough. Cut ropelike pieces into ½ inch pieces and place them onto a lightly floured surface. The pieces should look like small balls.

Next take a deep-fryer with vegetable oil in it. Heat the oil. Take the small dough balls and fry them until they turn a golden color. When the small dough balls turn golden, remove them and set them aside.

Then, in a frying pan add the honey and heat it until warm. Proceed by pouring the heated honey over the cookies. Sprinkle the honey coated cookies with powdered sugar and serve immediately.

Nutmeg Loaf

To make the “Nutmeg Loaf” you will need the following ingredients;

  • ½ cup margarine, softened
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Once you have your ingredients assembled it is time to start baking. In a mixing bowl, combine cream margarine and sugar. Add egg. Mix well with a hand mixer. Combine the flour, nutmeg, baking powder, and baking soda. Add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk.

Pour into a 9x5x3 inch loaf pan that has been coated with nonstick cooking spray. Bake in a 350 Degree F oven for 45 to 55 minutes, until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing to a wire tack to cool completely. It will yield 1 loaf.
