Materials & Ingredients
For this recipe for cherry pie you’ll need :
- clean hands
- 1 container such as a washable, reusable container with lid or a resealable zipper bag (Did you know? Ziploc bags are recyclable.)
- fresh orange or other citrus fruit peels from washed fruit
- sugar, white granulated or raw
- (optional) your choice of spice(s) like cinnamon, ginger, ground cloves, or allspice
Step 1, Sugar and Spice
Put sugar into container. Use enough to cover your citrus peels. Add spices to taste, if you like (optional).
Step 2, Peels
Add orange peels to container and shake to coat with sugar.
Step 3, Wait
Refrigerate and wait for citrus peels to absorb sugar overnight. Thick fresh peels from oranges should absorb sugar by themselves, thinner peels like tangerine peels may need a little help. You can speed up the process by adding a little water, shaking, and letting the peels soak up the flavor. This recipe for candied orange peels doesn’t require cooking, but wait time may be longer than recipes that do.
Step 4, Enjoy
Enjoy your homemade candied orange peels. Refrigerate leftover candied citrus fruit peels. I made orange and tangerine. The taste of these homemade candied orange peels reminded me of the candy orange slices that are similar to orange flavored Swedish fish. I’d like to try lemon, lime, and grapefruit next.
