How To Open Your Own Home Bakery

Starting a home bakery is rather easy. The hardest part is getting the word out there. The first thing you need to do however is decide if this is truly the right thing for you. Do you have the time to commit to it? Is your kitchen set up efficiently enough for you to do what you need to do? Can you afford the start up costs (they isn’t much)? Is this something you will enjoy doing? Continue to ask yourself these questions before you decide to get started. You have to make sure you are able to commit to following through with customers. You have to have the time and patience to get the things done. The start up costs aren’t much but you have to make sure you have a little to get you going. Your kitchen needs to be maneuverable and have plenty of space for you to do the things you need to do.

Next you need to decide on the items you are wanting to offer. You can offer just general items, large items or pretty much anything you want. Cookies, Cakes and Pies go over very well. Birthday cakes especially. You need to decide if you want to make specialty cakes (cake decorating, etc) or just regular cakes. Make a list of all of the items you want to offer. Then go down your list and categorize them into cookies, cakes, pies, etc. Whatever category you want to. Re-write your list so they are all in their categories. Then next to each item mark the price you are wanting to charge for the item. For cookies and things of that nature you will want to charge by the dozen.

Next decide how you want to advertise. You can advertise on web pages, blogs, and in stores. Pass out fliers and tell the mom’s at the schools/day cares that your children go to. Any way that you can think of to get the word out is going to help you be successful. You can even create business cards to pass out. This is where a lot of your start up costs come from. Advertising isn’t always cheap but you can do a lot of it yourself. If you have the money you can advertise in local papers and such as well.

Next get your website set up, print up your fliers, put your ad in the paper and talk to your families. Do what you can to get the word out. The more people know, the more business you will receive.

Now, taking orders. Figure out your set up for taking orders. Have paper and pen handy and write down the name and telephone number of the person ordering and what they would like to order. Figure up the price and let them know ahead of time. You don’t want to take the customer’s money until they have seen the final product. This way if they are not satisfied then no one looses out.

Gather all of your supplies and bake away. Make sure you are doing your best and performing to your highest. Remember that word of mouth is one of your biggest business makers. If they decide they like your work, they will tell others and then you will have new customers. You will satisfy the new customers and they will tell others and so on and so forth. Be sure everything is correct and deliver your order. And congratulations you have made your first business sale.

This is something you can continue to do out of your home. However, if you create enough business, you may eventually be able to open your own bakery outside of the home. However, remember that building a business takes quite a bit of time and work so this may not come for a year or two or even longer. So don’t be disappointed. Don’t be disappointed if you don’t skyrocket with business as well. These things take time. Offer samples and do other promotional activities that will help build your business and help others to understand that you are serious.
