I was at the grocery store yesterday morning picking up a few cans of cat food (I swear that cat eats more than we do). Since it was still early and I had some time before I had to go to work, I decided to check out some of the sales to see if they had anything I would be interested in.
I was in the refrigerated section and happened to notice they had something different, Our Family Break ‘n Bake Chocolate Chip Cookies. This was the first time I had seen this product. But, I love Break ‘n Bake cookie dough because of the convenience and this brand was considerably less than my usual brands so I decided to buy a package of it.
It turned out to be an OK product but there was an obvious difference between this brand and more expensive brands.
As I said before, I love cookie dough like this because there’s no need to mix it up and no need to measure it out. All I have to do is break off the individual chunks, put them on a cookie sheet and bake. In fact, it’s the only way I make chocolate chip cookies now. However, when it came to this brand, the breaking part wasn’t as easy as it might sound. I did my best, but rather than breaking off in well-measured squares, I the dough broke off in uneven pieces. This wasn’t too big of a deal. But, it did mean there were some cookies that were much larger than others (something that always leads to fights when you have kids).
This wasn’t the only difference between this brand and others. I baked the cookies according to instructions and expected to come out as soft and moist as the other brands. Instead, they came out dry and chewy and this got even worse as the cookies cooled. An hour after they were baked, the cookies were as hard as I would expect them to be a few days after being baked.
As far as taste goes, they weren’t terrible. But, they weren’t anything special either. Again, they were more affordable, but they also tasted like they were from a cheaper brand rather than a high-quality one.
If you like making chocolate chip cookies and want the convenience of Break ‘n Bake dough, I would recommend skipping this brand and paying a bit more money on a better product.
