Frosty mornings and chilly nights call for a steaming hot cup of cocoa. You can have this drink even if you are limiting your calorie and sugar intake. This delicious hot cocoa recipe uses Stevia powder as the sweetener and skim milk to satisfy your chocolate craving for only 103 calories, 13 carbs, and zero grams of fat! And it costs a fraction of pre-packaged cocoa mixes. Stevia is a natural sweetener that you can find at your local natural food store.
- 4 teaspoons cocoa powder (1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon)
- 1 scoop of pure Stevia powder (about 45 mg) (Amount of sweetener can be adjusted to your taste.)
- A dash each of salt, cinnamon and ginger
- A dash of nutmeg (optional)
- 2 teaspoons of hot water
- 1 cup of skim milk
Directions: Stir together dry ingredients in your favorite mug. Gradually stir in hot water until smooth. (It should be the consistency of chocolate syrup.) Then stir in the skim milk. Heat in the microwave for about 1 minute and 30 seconds. Adjust time required depending on your microwave oven. Be careful not to let the cocoa boil as this will scald the milk and create a skin on the surface. Stir once more.
If desired, top with one of the following:
1 tablespoon of whipped light cream (adds 10 calories, 1 carb (sugar), 1 gram of fat)
1 large marshmallow (adds 12 calories, 4 grams sugar/carbs)
I always like to sprinkle a little nutmeg on top.
Sit down, sip slowly, relax, unwind, enjoy!
Morning variation: Prepare as directed, then pour in some coffee for a mocha flavor drink.
For a portable version of this hot cocoa, substitute skim milk with 1/3 cup of nonfat dry milk. Mix powdered milk, dry cocoa, powdered Stevia, salt and spices in a zip lock sandwich bag. Seal with a vacuum sealer and take with you. To prepare, pour dry ingredients in mug and gradually stir in about one cup of hot water until smooth. Heat to desired temperature in microwave oven and enjoy delicious hot cocoa wherever you are!
4 cups of nonfat dry milk powder
1 cup of cocoa
½ teaspoon each of salt, cinnamon, and ginger
12 scoops of Stevia
To make one cup of cocoa, use 1/3 cup of dry mix and about 1 cup of water.
