Over the years I have become a little bit obsessed with bread makers.
The bread they make is often just as good (or better) than I can bake myself and it takes all of the hard work out of it.
As you may already know, I have reviewed quite a few bread makers on this blog, and I like to consider myself as a quasi-expert on the topic.
When researching bread makers I always seemed to come across people talking about the T-Fal Actibread – but I never got around to trying it. Something else always caught my eye on Amazon.
But I finally brought the Actibread a few weeks ago! And today is the day we take a look at one of the most well known, and respected bread makers on the market.
Breakdown Of The Features
The Actibread is all about customization, giving you what you want when you want it.
It has three settings for bread size, (1, 1.5, or 2lbs), three settings for crust type (light, medium and dark) and has a huge 15 different bread type settings.
I won’t list all the bread types here, but some of my favorite ones are Gluten free (salty or sweet), Gluten Free Cake, Whole Wheat (normal or rapid), Salt-free, sweet bread, and of course – freshly baked white French bread.
It is a respectable 16.1 x 12.5 x 14 inches in size and has 700 watts of power.
Alongside the customization features, the T-Fal has all of the standard features I would expect to see on a bread maker of this quality. Things like start delay timers, nonstick lining, LCD screens, keep warm functions, measuring cups and other various accessories.
Pro Tip: I did the math, by combining the bread types, crusts, and sizes this little bread maker can create over 135 different types of bread… Amazing.
The main thing I love about the T-Fal bread machine is the gluten-free options. As a long term baker, I know how different the process of hand baking gluten-free bread is compared to making normal bread.
Many other bread makers simply do not have the gluten-free option, or if they do have it – it is never usually good enough to replace hand baked bread.
But the T-Fal excels at this; it is one of the best gluten-free bread makers I have ever used – by far.
Don’t start thinking that this is a bread maker that can only do gluten-free bread. Quite the opposite, in fact, it hands down makes some of the darn tastiest wheat-based bread that has ever been baked in my kitchen.
I have personally tried many of the different settings, and each and every time the end result was astonishingly tasty.
Now admittedly, The T-Fal bread machine is not the only bread maker in the world that makes good bread, but it is certainly up there among the best of them.
The function that really sets it above and beyond many of the other bread makers I have reviewed is its keep warm option. Sounds silly I know, but trust me on this…
I know it is my fault in a way, I should set the timer for the perfect time to eat my bread.
What happens is that I set the timer in the morning, I go to work – and I want to have fresh bread waiting for me when I get back (and I want the freshly baked bread smell in my home!).
But life gets in the way sometimes (as is often the case), and I get home later than expected. Anything less than perfect bread is a little disappointing – especially as I have been looking forward to it all day.
Other units often struggle to keep the bread at the perfect temperature before I am ready to eat it if I am later than expected. Sometimes it will be too moist, other times it will be too dry.
But the Tefal breadmaker keeps my bread at a perfect temperature, in the perfect humidity – it really works around me, instead of me having to work around it. If you are new to bread makers, you will probably learn quickly that you often find yourself eating it a little later than planned. So this is an excellent feature to look out for.
Once I have eaten my dinner and my super tasty bread – it’s time to clean up.
This is something that anyone with a bread maker will tell you is the worst part of owning one. Many brands will claim they have a totally nonstick lining to their bread makers, but in reality – cleaning them is a pain.
Of the 10 or so times, I used the T-Fal before writing this review, it never took me more than 45 seconds to clean the Teflon coated pan ready for use the next day. Any remnants of bread literally fell off the side of the pan with a single wipe of a wet sponge.
Pro Tip: Don’t underestimate the value of having a bread maker that is easy to clean. It makes life so much easier.
Quite honestly, it is difficult to find much wrong the way the T-Fal operates. It does everything I expect of a quality bread maker, time and time again.
My one slight issue with it is its appearance.
I have never been the kind of person that appreciates the brushed stainless steel look, but I can deal with it when I have to – some of my most loved kitchen appliances are stainless.
But I do dislike the combination of black plastic and stainless steel on the T-Fal. I know this is personal taste, and many of you may disagree with me and think that it’s a good looking little unit.
But personally, I would have liked them to at least offer a more traditional white unit alongside the stainless steel one.
Pro Tip: You can probably ignore me on this section, many people love stainless steel.
The T-Fal is a bread maker that fits around my life; it’s a bread maker that does what I want, exactly how I want it, and exactly when I want it.
It’s one of the best bread makers I have ever used. Despite me personally not liking the way it looks, it takes pride of place on my countertops.
The bread it makes is too darn tasty for it to be anywhere else.
